Another day unfolds in the heart of the Maasai Mar

Another day unfolds in the heart of the Maasai Mara, where the delicate balance of life and death plays out under the endless African skies.
As we journeyed from the airstrip to our lodge, a remarkable scene began to unfold. A lioness, sleek and focused, was on the hunt. Her eyes had locked onto a small herd of zebra and her attention drawn to a vulnerable foal—a tender life, unaware of the peril stalking in the tall grass.
With calculated precision, the lioness used the long grasses to her advantage, her tawny coat blending seamlessly with the landscape. Silent and patient, she crept closer until, with an explosive burst of speed, she lunged. In moments, she was upon her target.
But then, an extraordinary twist: the adult zebras, driven by courage and instinct, charged at the lioness in a desperate bid to save the foal. Their powerful hooves lashed out, striking again and again. Yet, despite their valiant efforts, the outcome was inevitable. The lioness, jaws locked on her prize, was undeterred. The foal’s fate was sealed.
After a brief retreat, the lioness waited! Once the adults had moved away, she returned to claim her hard-won meal. Ever watchful of other predators lurking nearby, she dragged her prize to a place of safety.

Our Greater Kruger offices had 5 giraffes visiting this morning. These gracious animals have an exceptionally strong heart to pump blood up their long necks to the brain. Their blood pressure is about twice that of humans, and they have specialized blood vessels to prevent fainting when they bend down to drink.
